1. Chatfield State Park
One of the local outdoor areas where the odds of finding a new bird are in your favor is Chatfield State Park, located about 10 minutes away from Legacy at Highlands Ranch. It is a contender for most birds in a single location in the state of Colorado. As such, you’re likely to see lots of Indigo Buntings, Yellow-billed Cuckoos, American Dippers, and other shorebirds and waterfowl (depending on when you visit). You’ll need a state parks pass to enter this park.
2. Eaglewatch Lake Loop
For those looking to keep their birding excursion short, Eaglewatch Lake Loop is an excellent option. After all, it’s only about 1.8 miles long. As the name suggests, most of the birds you’ll see on this hike are eagles. However, other birds come and go depending on the season. It’s also just a 6.2-mile drive away from your apartment.
3. South Platte River Trail
Another popular bird watching spot near Highlands Ranch is South Platte River Trail. Once you’ve taken the 20-minute drive to get to the start of this 19-mile trail, you should be able to spot various bird species. Local birders have sighted Bank Swallows, Barrow’s Goldeneyes, Northern Rough-winged Swallows, and many more.
