Enjoy an Afternoon of Bird Watching at Hudson Gardens

Nestled along the banks of the South Platte River is a stunning thirty-acre destination known as the Hudson Gardens.

Visitors can explore 365 days a year, and many come to enjoy a fun-filled afternoon of bird watching.

Nearly 100 different species have been spotted in and around the gardens, and highlights include:

Belted Kingfisher

Belted kingfishers are one of the gardens’ most popular residents. They’re identified by their blue-gray feathers and white underparts with a blue breast band. These birds have a long, thick dagger-like bill, and when foraging, they perch on a branch before plunging headfirst into a body of water where they search for fish and other aquatic life.

Northern Flickers

Northern flickers are fairly large woodpeckers featuring brownish feathers with rich black spots. They spend a lot of time on the ground, and when in the air, they fly in an up and down path using heavy flaps. Northern flickers are often found in open habitats, and birdwatchers should listen for their “kyeer” call that lasts about a half-second.

Great Blue Heron

Great blue herons are tall charming birds that display a long neck, bluish-gray feathers, and a long orangish-yellow beak. They’re the largest of the North American herons, and while in flight, they curl their neck into a tight “S” shape. When in the water, these birds wade slowly or stand statue-still as they search for fish, and when great blue herons find prey, they make a lightning-fast thrust of their neck and head.

In addition to bird watching, visitors can also see unique art installations, learn about bees at the honey bee apiary, and explore beautiful gardens that are in their glory throughout the year.
