Three female lions from a pride relaxing together

Spend a Day Seeing the Wild Animal Sanctuary near Highlands Ranch

Just a one-hour drive from Highlands Ranch, you’ll find
The Wild Animal Sanctuary. Spanning nearly 10,000 acres, this sanctuary provides a home for large animals rescued from captivity. The Sanctuary is not a zoo, but offers a completely different experience. Prides of African lions roam freely in this serene setting, as well as tigers, wolves, bears, and other large carnivores, living and coexisting on the sanctuary in peace.

Their Mission

The Wild Animal Sanctuary rescues and cares for the animals, while educating the public about the captive wildlife crisis. They stress that while the sanctuary is a fun and entertaining place to visit, drawing 150,000 visitors annually, the purpose of the sanctuary is not to entertain, but instead for the protection and care of the animals. Visitors are drawn to the peaceful environment where you can observe the animals in their natural habitat.

Every animal in the sanctuary was rescued from an illegal or abusive situation and needs the sanctuary and public’s help to survive. The Wild Animal Sanctuary’s goal is to teach visitors the importance of caring for these animals and providing an atmosphere where they can live safely.
