Explore Denver’s Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum from Home

Just a short distance from Highlands Ranch, Denver’s Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum preserves the history of the Lowry Air Force Base between 1938 and 1994. The museum proudly displays more than fifty iconic aircraft and space vehicles, and there’s always something to discover. Luckily, the museum is offering a virtual look at the impressive collection on its YouTube channel. Here is a sample of the historic aircraft you can learn all about while enjoying the comfort of our Highlands Ranch apartments.

B-1A LancerĀ

A rare exhibition, only four of these aircraft were ever produced for the United States military. Used to deliver nuclear weapons, the B-1A Lancer could reach speeds over 1,400 mph. President Carter canceled the B1-A Lancer program in the late 1970s, though it continued to serve as a testbed for the B-1B Lancer, which remains in use today.

Douglas B-18 Bolo

One of the oldest aircraft in the collection, the Douglas B-18 Bolo was first produced in 1937. It patrolled the East Coast as an anti-submarine aircraft and also protected Alaska and the Panama Canal. The plane held a crew of six and had a max speed of 215 mph.

F-4 Phantom

In service between the early 1960s and late 1990s, the F-4 Phantom was a do-it-all fighter. This aircraft was used in everything from air superiority to reconnaissance missions. It was one of the most famous fighter jets of the postwar age, used by the air forces of eleven allied countries. However, only 5,195 of these aircraft were ever built. The plane on view at the museum served as a trainer at the Lowry Air Force Base.
