hiking in the red rocks in Colorado

Marvel at Red Rocks on a Hike Near Highlands Ranch

Colorado is famous for its red rock formations, whose brilliant hue comes from red sandstone. From the world-renowned amphitheater to local state parks, there are multiple nearby hikes that include views of red rocks and the big Colorado sky.

Carpenter Peak Hike

This six-mile hike is located in Roxborough State Park, a quick twenty-minute drive from Highlands Ranch. In summer, enjoy the wildflowers in bloom as you hike or run this trail, which features just over 1,000 feet elevation gain over the six-mile trail. In winter, this trail can be used by cross-country skiers and snowshoers. All Colorado state parks charge an entrance fee, with the option to pay per use or to purchase an annual pass; with the abundant wildlife in the park, park rangers ask that visitors leave their dogs at home.

Red Rocks Trail

While the Red Rocks Amphitheater may be best known for concerts, the park is also used for yoga, movie screenings, hiking, and more. The 5.8 mile Red Rocks Trail is a great option for those acclimating to Colorado’s altitude who also want to see excellent views of the famous rockscape. Dogs are welcome to join in on the fun, although don’t forget plenty of water for both hikers and pup, as the trail is quite exposed and offers little shade.

Coyote Song Trail Loop

Looking for a quick hike or trail run? Head over to Littleton’s South Valley Park and try this 3-mile moderate loop, which features just over 300 feet elevation gain and a nicely maintained and wide trail. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash. While the trail is technically available year-round, spring rain can make the trail quite muddy, so be prepared for all types of trail conditions.
